The First Abomination

The key that unlocks the mystery of this prophetic event is found in Daniel's first two verses."In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem and besieged it. The Lord handed Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and some of the utensils of the House of God into his hands; , took them to the land of Shinar, to the house of their god, and put them in the house of their god's treasury " (Daniel 1: 1-2) . In these two short sentences Daniel provides a concise historical picture for the rest of the book that follows.
A further study of Daniel's prologue reveals the abomination of desolation existing in its time and taken into captivity in Jerusalem. The Chronicler reveals the reason why the Jewish kings fell before Babylon. "Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign. And he did what was bad in the eyes of the Lord his God". It was because of Jehovah's wicked life that God allowed him to be taken captive.
The important feature of this situation is that Jehovah's evil deeds are described as follows: "Now, the rest of Jehoiakim's acts, and the abominations he did, and what he found against him, are written in the book of kings Israel and Judah. And his son Joaquim reigned in his place " (2 Chronicles 36: 5-8). It was precisely the abominations of Jehoiakim, which led him and his city to lose the protection of God and, therefore, to fall before Nebuchadnezzar.
Unfortunately Joaquim, his son, did not do much better. Scripture tells us that he also did "what was bad in the eyes of the Lord" . Consequently, he was also taken captive to Babylon,"Zedekiah your brother" was placed as king over Judah and Jerusalem (v. 9-11).
The Bible continues to record that not only did Zedekiah come to be as bad as his two predecessors, but, "Also all the chief priests and the people increased the transgressions more and more, according to all the abominations of the Gentiles; and they contaminated the house that the LORD had sanctified in Jerusalem " (v. 12-14) . God's political and religious leaders, like the people, adopted pagan cults as their own. They did this at the expense of the truth revealed by God. Notice where these abominations were committed: "and the people increased the transgressions more and more, according to all the abominations of the Gentiles;(v. 14) . These abominations were in the place consecrated to God as a saint, the "house of the Lord". The religious leaders of the day had purposely led people to adopt pagan worship practices and incorporate them into the worship of God. And by replacing God's commandments with men's vain concepts, the leaders of God's inheritance provoked His wrath. The people rejected God's calls for repentance and reform and were left to reap the consequences. "Therefore, the Lord brought up the king of the Chaldeans against him, who killed his youth with the sword in the house of his sanctuary" (v. 17).
This judgment was felt not only in the shedding of blood, but in the complete destruction of the city and the sanctuary (v. 19) ."to fulfill the word of the Lord spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its sabbaths; for it rested for all the days of desolation, until the seventy years were fulfilled" (v. 21) . The result of God's people practicing the religious abominations of the Gentiles was the desolation of their land, the city and the sanctuary.
