DISHON.—1. A son of Seir (Gen_36:21 = 1Ch_1:38). 2. A son of Anah and grandson of Seir (Gen_36:25, cf. Gen_36:30 = 1Ch_1:41; Dishon should also be read for MT [Note: Massoretic Text.] Dishan in Gen_36:26). Dishan and Dishon are, of course, not individual names, but the eponyms of Horite clans. Their exact location is a matter of uncertainty.

Dishon
(Hebrews Dishon", דִּישִׁוֹן, antilope; Sept. Δησών, in 1Ch_1:41 Δαισών), the name of two descendants of Seir the Horite. Dishon and Dishan belong to the same root, which may possibly reappear in the name Deish noticed by Abulfeda (Hist. Anteisl. page 196). The geographical position of the tribes descended from these patriarchs is uncertain. Knobel (Comm. in loc.) places them to the E. and S.E. of the Gulf of Akaba, on the ground that the names of Dishon's sons, Eshban and Hemdan, may be identified with Usbany and Humneidy, branches, of the tribe of Omran. Such identifications must be received with caution, as similar names are found in other parts of Arabia-Hamde, for instance, near Tayf, and again Hamdan, which bears a still closer resemblance to the original name, near Sana (Burckhardt's Arabia, 1:156; 2:376). SEE HORITE.
1. Seir's fifth son, and head of one of the aboriginal Idumaean tribes (Gen_36:21; Gen_36:30; 1Ch_1:38). B.C. cir. 1963. In the original of Gen_36:26, where his four sons are mentioned, the name is, by some transposition, DISHAN, which our translators (following the Sept. and the parallel passage 1Ch_1:41) have correctly changed to "Dishon." 2. His grandson, the only son of Anah, and brother of Aholibamah, Esau's second wife (Gen_36:25; 1Ch_1:41). B.C. considerably post 1963.
