GATH-RIMMON.—1. A city in Dan, near Jebud and Bene-herak (Jos_19:45), assigned to the Kohathites (Jos_21:24), and reckoned (1Ch_6:69) to Ephraim. It is unidentified. 2. A city of Manasseh, assigned to the Kohathites (Jos_21:25). LXX [Note: Septuagint.] has Iebatha (B), or Baithsa (A), while 1Ch_6:70 has Bileam = Ibleam (wh. see). The position of the town is not indicated, so in this confusion no identification is possible.

("winepress of the pomegranates".)
1. A city of Dan, given to the Levites (Jos_19:45; Jos_21:24; 1Ch_6:69). On the Philistine plain.
2. A town of Manasseh, W. of Jordan, assigned to the Levites (Jos_21:25). But Bileam (i.e. Ibleam, Jos_17:11) in 1Ch_6:70, which is probably the true reading in Joshua, the copyist's eye catching "Gath-rimmon" in the previous verse.
Fausset's Bible Dictionary

Gath-rim'mon . (press of the pomegranate).
1. A city given out of the tribe of Dan, to the Levites, Jos_21:24; 1Ch_6:69, situated on the plain of Philistia, apparently not far from Joppa. Jos_19:45.
2. A town of the half tribe of Manasseh, west of the Jordan, assigned to the Levites. Jos_21:25. The reading Gath-rimmon, is probably an error of the transcribers.

gath-rim?un (גּ ת רמּון, gath rimmōn, ?winepress of Rimmon?):
(1) A city in the territory of Dan named with Bene-berak and Me-jarkon, in the plain not far from Joppa (Jos_19:45), assigned to the Kohathite Levites (Jos_21:24), reckoned to Ephraim in 1Ch_6:69. Eusebius, Onomasticon locates it 12 miles from Eleutheropolis on the way to Diospolis. This, however, is too far to the South. More probably it is identical with the ?Gath? which Eusebius, Onomasticon places between Antipatris and Jamnia. It is not identified.
(2) A town in the territory of Manasseh, West of Jordan, given to the Levites (Jos_21:25). There is nothing to indicate the position of the place, and there is much confusion in the writing of the name: Septuagint Codex Alexandrinus, ?Baithsa?; Codex Vaticanus, ?Jebatha.? In 1Ch_6:70 it is replaced by ?Bileam,? i.e. IBLEAM (which see).

Gath-rimmon
(Heb. Gath-Rimmon', גִּת9רַמּוֹן, press of the pomegranate; Sept. Γεθρεμμών, Vulgate Gethremmon), a town in the tribe of Dan (Jos_19:45), and a Levitical city (Jos_21:24; 1Ch_6:69). In the time of Eusebius and Jerome it was a very large village, "twelve miles from Diospolis as you go hence to Eleutheropolis" (Onosast. s.v. Γεθρεμμών, Gethreasmon); but the same writers also mention a Gath five Raoman miles north of Eleutberopolis towards Diospolis (ib. s.v. Γέθ, Geth). Dr. Robinson thinks them to be one place, and that the site is found in Deir Dubbasn, where are some remarkable excavations (Researches, 2:421). In that case, however, it could not have lain within the territory of Dan, which passed at a point between the two positions. The firstmentioned distance would correspond to that of the modern site Rafat, cometaining wide- spread ruins (Robinson, Researches, 3:20).
The Gath-rimmon mentioned in Jos_21:25 as being in the tribe of Manasseh, Rausner (Palistina, page 173) supposes to be another Levitical city; but Winer (Realwörterbuch, s.v. Gath) ascribes its origin to ,a maistake of the transcriber, who repeated the word from the preceding Verse. The Sept. has Ι᾿εβαθά (v.r. Βαιθσά), probably intended for the IBLEAM SEE IBLEAM (q.v.) of Jos_17:11.
