Ha'shum. (rich).
1. Bene-Hashum, (that is, sons of Hashum), 223 in number, came back from Babylon with Zerubbabel. Ezr_2:19; Ezr_10:33; Neh_7:22. (B.C. Before 536). The chief man of the family was among these, who sealed the covenant with Nehemiah. Neh_10:18. (B.C. 410).
2. One of the priests or Levites, who stood on Ezra's left hand, while he read the law to the congregation. Neh_8:4. (B.C. 410).

(1) In Ezr_2:19; Neh_7:22, ?children of Hashum? are mentioned among the returning exiles. In Ezr_10:33 (compare 1 Esdras 9:33, ?Asom?), members of the same family are named among those who married foreign wives.
(2) One of those who stood on Ezra's left at the reading of the law (Neh_8:4; 1 Esdras 9:44, ?Lothasubus?). The signer of the covenant (Neh_10:18) is possibly the same.

Hashum
(Heb. Chashum', חָשֻׁם, opulent; Sept. Α᾿σούμ, Α᾿σήμ, ᾿Ησαμί, ᾿Ωσύμ, ᾿Ησάμ), the name apparently of two or three men about the time of the Captivity.
1. An Israelite whose posterity (or rather,. perhaps, am place whose inhabitants), to the number of 223 males,. or 328 in all, returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel. (Ezr_2:19; Neh_7:22); some of whom afterwards. divorced their Gentile wives (Ezr_10:33). The associated names seem to indicate a locality in the northwestern part of the territory of Benjamin. B.C. ante 536.
2. One of those who stood at Ezra's left hand while he was reading the law to the people (Neh_8:4); probably the same with one of the chief of the people who subscribed Nehemiah's covenant (Neh_10:18). B.C. cir. 410.
