HATTUSH.—1. A priestly family that went up with Zerubbabel (Neh_12:2) and signed the covenant (Neh_10:4). 2. A descendant of David, who returned with Ezra from Babylon (Ezr_8:2 [read with 1Es_8:29 ‘of the sons of David, Hattush the son of Shecaniah’]); see also 1Ch_3:22 (but if we accept the LXX [Note: Septuagint.] reading here, a younger Hattush must be meant). In 1 Es. the name is Attus. 3. A builder at the wall of Jerusalem (Neh_3:10).
Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible
Edited by James Hastings, D.D. Published in 1909

1. 1Ch_3:22. Lord A. Hervey identifies Shemaiah with Shimei, Zerubbabel's brother. Thus Hattush would be Zerubbabel's nephew. An Hattush "of the sons of David" (Ezr_8:2). An Hattush in Neh_12:2. The one and the same Hattush may be meant in all the passages. But the same name in the same family may be repeated in different generations; the Hattush in 1Ch_3:22 seems distinct from the Hattush of Ezr_8:2; Neh_12:2.
2. Neh_3:10.

hat?ush (חטּוּשׁ, ḥaṭṭūsh):
(1) Son of Shemaiah, a descendant of the kings of Judah, in the 5th generation from Zerubbabel (1Ch_3:22). He returned with Zerubbabel and Ezra from Babylon to Jerusalem (Ezr_8:2; Neh_12:2). (There is some doubt as to whether the Hatrush of the lineage of David and the priest of the same name, mentioned in Neh_10:4 and Neh_12:2, are one and the same.) He was one of those who signed the covenant with Nehemiah (Neh_10:4).
(2) Son of Hashabneiah; aided Nehemiah to repair the walls of Jerusalem (Neh_3:10).

Hattush
(Heb. Chattush', חִטּוּשׁ, prob. assembled [Furst, contender]; Sept. Α᾿ττούς, but Χεττούς in 1Ch_3:22, and v.r. Λαττούς in Ezr_8:2), the name of several men about or after the time of the return from Babylon.
1. A priest who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel (Neh_12:2). B.C. 536.
2. A descendant of David who accompanied Ezra to Jerusalem (Ezr_8:2). B.C. 459. See No. 5.
3. Son of Hashabniah, and one of those who rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem (Neh_3:10). B.C. 446. He was possibly the same with No. 2.
4. One of the priests who united in the sacred covenant with Nehemiah (Neh_10:4). B.C. cir. 410.
5. One of the sons of Shemaiah, among the posterity of Zerubbabel (1Ch_3:22), and contemporary with the Nagge of Luk_3:25 (see Strong's Harm. and Expos. of the Gospels, p. 17). B.C. somewhat post 406. By some he is identified with No. 2 above, reading Ezr_8:2 (after the (Sept.) thus: “of the sons of David; Hattush of the sons of Shechaniah.” This, however, is not only forbidden by other chronological notices, SEE DARIUS; SEE ZERUBBABEL, but rests on the too slender support for the genuineness of the text itself in question; where, as in Ezr_8:5, we may suppose that a name is missing, or that the name Shechaniah itself has crept in from the latter verse, since it appears nowhere else as that of a family head. SEE SHECHANIAH.
