jē?ush (יעוּשׁ, ye‛ūsh, probably ?he protects,? ?he comes to help?; see HPN, 109; Kethibh is יעישׁ, ye‛ı̄sh, in Gen_36:5, Gen_36:14; 1Ch_7:10):
(1) A ?son? of Esau (Gen_36:5, Gen_36:14, Gen_36:18; 1Ch_1:35). ?The name is thought by some to be identical with that, of an Arabian lion-god Yaġuṯ..., meaning 'helper,' whose antiquity is vouched for by inscriptions of Thamud? (Skinner, Gen, 432).
(2) A Benjamite (1Ch_7:10), but probably a Zebulunite. See Curtis, Chronicles, 145 ff.
(3) A descendant of King Saul, the King James Version ?Jehush? (1Ch_8:39).
(4) A Gershonite Levite (1Ch_23:10, 1Ch_23:11).
(5) A son of King Rehoboam (2Ch_11:19).

(Hebrew Yeush', יְעוּשׁ, assembler; written יְעַישׁ, Yeish', in the text of Gen_36:5; Gen_36:14; 1Ch_7:10), the name of several men.
1. (Sept. Ι᾿εούς, but Ι᾿εούλ, in 1Ch_1:35; Vulg. Jehus). The oldest of the three sons of Esau by Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah, born in Canaan, but afterwards a sheik of the Edomites (Gen_36:5; Gen_36:14; Gen_36:18; 1Ch_1:35). B.C. post 1964.
2. (Sept. Ι᾿εώς v.r. Ι᾿αούς, Vulg. Jehus.) The first named of the sons of Bilhan, grandson of Benjamin (1Ch_7:10). B.C. considerably post 1856.
3. (Sept. Ι᾿ωάς, Vulg. Jaus.) A Levite, one of the four sons of Shimei; not having many sons, he was reckoned with his brother Beriah as the third branch of the family (1Ch_23:10-11). B.C. 1014.
4. (Sept. Ι᾿εούς, Vulg. Jehus.) One of the three sons of Rehoboam, apparently by Abihail, his second wife (2Ch_11:19). B.C. post 973.
5. (Sept. Ι᾿διάς v.r. Ι᾿άς, Vulg. Jehus, A. Vers. “Jehush.”) The second son of Eshek, brother of Azel, of the descendants of Saul (1Ch_8:39). B.C. cir. 588.
