am?ram (עמרם, ‛amrām, ?people exalted?):
(1) Father of Aaron, Moses and Miriam (Exo_6:20; Num_26:59; 1Ch_6:3; 1Ch_23:13); and a son of Kohath, the son of Levi (Exo_6:18; Num_3:19, etc.). It is not certain that he was literally the son of Kohath, but rather his descendant, since there were ten generations from Joseph to Joshua (1Ch_7:20-27), while only four are actually mentioned from Levi to Moses for the corresponding period. Moreover the Kohathites at the time of the Exodus numbered 8,600 (Num_3:28), which would therefore have been an impossibility if only two generations had lived. It seems best to regard Amram as a descendant of Kohath, and his wife Jochebed as a ?daughter of Levi? in a general sense.
(2) One of the Bani, who in the days of Ezra had taken a foreign wife (Ezr_10:34).
(3) In 1Ch_1:41 (the King James Version) for the properly read HAMRAN of the Revised Version (British and American) (חמרן, ḥamrān), a Horite, who in Gen_36:26 is called HEMDAN (which see).

Amram
(Heb., Amrram', עִמְרָם, kindred of the High, i.e. friend of Jehovah; Sept. in Exo_6:20, Α᾿μβράμ; in 1Ch_1:41, Ε᾿μερών v. r. Α᾿μαδά, [where the text has חִמְרָן; Chaemran', marg. Hamrana]; elsewhere Α᾿μράμ), the name of two or three men.
1. The son of Kohath, the son of Levi; he married Jochebed, “his father's sister,” by whom he had Aaron, Miriam, and Moses (Exo_6:18; Num_3:19). He died in Egypt, aged 137 years (Exo_6:20), B.C. ante 1658. Before the giving of the law, it was permitted to marry a father's sister, but this was afterward forbidden (Lev_18:12). His descendants were sometimes called Amramites (Num_3:27; 1Ch_26:23).
2. One of the “sons” of Bani, who, after the return from Babylon, separated from his Gentile wife (Ezr_10:34), B.C. 459.
3. A descendant of Esau (1Ch_1:41). In Gen_36:26, he is called more correctly HEMDAN SEE HEMDAN (q.v.).
