LETUSHIM.One of the Dedanite tribes in N. Arabia (Gen_25:3), the others being Leummim and Asshurim (wh. see). In this verse LXX [Note: Septuagint.] adds two other tribes; but in the parallel passage, 1Ch_1:32, the sons of Dedan are omitted altogether both in MT [Note: Massoretic Text.] and in most MSS of LXX [Note: Septuagint.] . None of the three tribes has been identified.

Letushim
(Heb. Letushiim', לְטוּשַׁים, hammered, plur.; Sept. Λατουσιείμ), the second named of the three sons of Dedan (grandson of Abraham by Keturah), and head of an Arabian tribe descended from him (Gen_30:3; and Vulg. at 1Ch_1:32). B.C. considerably post 2024. SEE ARABIA. Fresnel (Journ. Asiat. 3e serie, 6:217) identifies it with Tasm, one of the ancient and extinct tribes of Arabia, just as he compares Leummim with Umeiyim. The names may perhaps be regarded as commencing with the article. Nevertheless, the identification in each case seems to be quite untenable. It is noteworthy that the three sons of the Keturahite Dedan are named in the plural form, evidently as tribes descended from him (Smith). Forster supposes (Geor. of Arabia, 1:334) that the Letushim were absorbed in the generic appellation of Dedanim (Jer_25:23; Eze_25:13; Isa_21:13), and that they dwelt in the desert eastward of Edom.
