prok?ṓ-rus (Πρόχορος, Próchoros) : One of ?the seven? chosen by the Christian community in Jerusalem to superintend the dispensing of charity to the widows and other poor (Act_6:5). The name is Greek, and he may have been a Hellenist. According to tradition he became bishop of Nicomedia and died a martyr at Antioch.

Prochorus
(Πρόχορος), one of the seven deacons, being the third on the list, and named next after Stephen and Philip (Act_6:5), A.D. 30. No further mention of him is made in the N.T. There is a tradition that he was consecrated by St. Peter bishop of Nicomedia (Baron. 1, 292). In the Magna Bibliotheca Patrum (Colon. Agripp. 1618, 1, 49-69) will be found a fabulous Historia Prochori, Christi Discipuli, de Vita B. Joannis Apostoli.
