REAPING.—See Agriculture, 3.

rēp?ing (קצר, ḳācar; θερίζω, therı́zō): Reaping in ancient times, as at present, consisted in either pulling up the grain by the roots or cutting it with a sickle (see SICKLE), and then binding the stalks into bundles to be carried to the threshing-floor. If the Egyptian sculptures are true to life, reaping was sometimes divided into two operations, the heads of grain and the stalks being reaped separately. In Palestine and Syria both pulling and cutting are still practiced, the former when the ground is stony and the spears scarce. Even where the sickle is used, much of the grain comes up by the roots, owing to the toughness of the dried stalks or the dullness of the sickle. The reaper sometimes wears pieces of cane on the fingers of the hand which gathers the grain in order to protect them from injury by the sharp grasses or the sickle. There were definite laws established by the Hebrews in regard to reaping (Lev_19:9; Lev_23:10; Lev_25:5, Lev_25:11; Deu_16:9). Samuel mentions the task of reaping the harvest as one of the requirements which would be made by the king for whom the people were clamoring (1Sa_8:12).

Figurative:
The certainty of the consequences of good and evil doing were often typified by the sowing and the reaping of harvests (Job_4:8; Pro_22:8; Hos_8:7; Hos_10:12, Hos_10:13; 2Co_9:6; Gal_6:7, Gal_6:8). ?They that sow in tears shall reap in joy? is found in the liberated captives' song (Psa_126:5). ?He that regardeth the clouds shall not reap,? i.e. a lack of faith in God's care will be punished (Ecc_11:4); compare also the lesson of trust drawn from the birds (Mat_6:26; Luk_12:24). Sowing and not reaping the harvest is mentioned as a punishment for disobedience (Job_31:8; Jer_12:13; Mic_6:15). Reaping where he sowed not, showed the injustice of the landlord (Mat_25:26), as did also the withholding of the reapers' wages (Jam_5:4). In God's Kingdom there is a division of labor: ?He that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together? (Joh_4:36-38). In John's vision he saw an angel reap the earth (Rev_14:15, Rev_14:16). Reaping
( קָצִרkts, ts, to cult if; θερίζω). Reaping in Palestine was usually done by the sickle, to which reference is occasionally made in Scripture. SEE SICKLE. But there can be little doubt that the modern practice of pulling up by the roots, instead of cutting the corn, also prevailed to a considerable extent in ancient times. The corn seldom yields so much straw as in this country, and pulling is resorted to in order to obtain a larger supply of fodder. Maundrell thus describes the practice as he noticed it in 1697: “All that occurred to us new in these days' travel was a particular way used by the country people in gathering their corn, it being now harvest-time. They plucked it up by handfuls from the roots, leaving the most fruitful fields as naked as if nothing had ever grown on them. This was their practice in all the places of the East that I have seen; and the reason is that they may lose none of their straw, which is generally very short, and necessary for the sustenance of their cattle, no hay being here made. I mention this,” he adds, “because it seems to give light to that expression of the Psa_129:6 ‘which withereth before it be plucked up,' where there seems to be a manifest allusion to the custom.” This undoubtedly is the correct mealning of the expression; and the real allusion is lost sight of by the rendering in the A.V., ‘before it groweth up.” It grows, but withers before the plucking- time comes — an emblem of the premature decay and fruitlessness of the wicked.
