1Ch_27:8. "The IZRAHITE" or "Zarhite" (1Ch_27:13); of the family of Zerah, son of Judah (1Ch_2:4; 1Ch_2:6). Called SHAMMOTH in 1Ch_11:27. Belonging to Harod, not "Hurorite" (a mistake of Resh ( ר ) for Daleth ( ד )); 2Sa_23:25, "SHAMMAH the Harodite."

(Heb. Shamhuth', שִׁמְהוּת, prob. desolation; Sept. Σαμαώθ v.r. Σαλαώθ; Vulg. Samaoth), the fifth captain for the fifth month in David's arrangement of his army (1Ch_27:8). B.C. 1020. His designation הִיַּזְרָח, hay-yizrach, i.e. the Yizrach, is perhaps for הִזִּרְחַי, haz-zarchi, the Zarhite, or descendant of Zerah, the son of Judah. From a comparison of the lists in 1Ch_11:27, it would seem that Shamhuth is the same as Shammoth (q.v.) the Harorite.
