SHEPHATIAH (‘Jah has judged’).—1. One of David’s sons (2Sa_3:4 = 1Ch_3:3). 2. A family which returned with Zerub. (Ezr_2:4 = Neh_7:9) and Ezra (Ezr_8:8). The name appears in 1Es_5:9 as Saphat and in 1Es_8:34 as Saphatias. 3. A family of the ‘sons’ of Solomon’s servants (Ezr_2:57 = Neh_7:59) = 1Es_5:33 Saphuthi. 4. A Judahite family (Neh_11:4). 5. A Benjamite family (1Ch_9:8). Either this or the preceding should perhaps be identified with No. 2 above. 6. A contemporary of Jeremiah (Jer_38:1). 7. A Benjamite warrior who joined David at Ziklag (1Ch_12:5). 8. A Simeonite prince (1Ch_27:16). 9. A son of Jehoshaphat (2Ch_21:2).

1. The fifth son of David. 2Sa_3:4; 1Ch_3:3. (B.C. about 1050).
2. The family of Shephatiah, 372 in number, returned with Zerubbabel. Ezr_2:4; Neh_7:9. See Ezr_8:8. (B.C. 536).
3. The family, of another Shephatiah, who came up with Zerubbabel. Ezr_2:4.
4. A descendant of Judah. Neh_11:4.
5. One of the princes of Judah, who counselled Zedekiah, to put Jeremiah in the dungeon. Jer_38:1. (B.C. 589).
6. One of the Benjamite warriors, who joined David in his retreat at Ziklag. 1Ch_12:5. (B.C. 1054).
7. Chief of the Simeonites, in the reign of David. 1Ch_37:16.
8. Son of Jehoshaphat. 2Ch_21:2. (B.C. 887).

(1) A son of David, by Abital (2Sa_3:4; 1Ch_3:3).
(2) A Benjamite, father of Meshullam, of Jerusalem (1Ch_9:8).
(3) A Benjamite, who joined David at Ziklag (1Ch_12:5).
(4) A prince of the Simeonites in the time of David (1Ch_27:16).
(5) A son of King Jehoshaphat (2Ch_21:2).
(6) A family, 372 of whom returned with Zerubbabel (Ezr_2:4; Neh_7:9); 80 more males of this family, with their head, returned with Ezra (Ezr_8:8).
(7) A servant of Solomon, 392 of whose descendants returned with Zerubbabel (Ezr_2:57 f; Neh_7:59 f); ?Saphat? in 1 Esdras 5:9 and ?Saphatias? in 1 Esdras 8:34.
(8) A Perezzite (Judahite), some of whose descendants dwelt at Jerusalem in the time of Nehemiah (Neh_11:4).
(9) A son of Mattan, a contemporary of Jeremiah (Jer_38:1).

(Heb. Shephatyah', שְׁפִטְיָה [thrice in the prolonged form Shephatya'hu, שְׁפִטְיָהוּ, 1Ch_12:5; 1Ch_27:16; 2Ch_21:2], judged of Jehovah; Sept. Σαφατία v.r. Σαφατίας, etc.), the name of a considerable number of Israelites.
1. The Haruphite (or descendant of Hareph), and one of the Benjamite warriors who joined David at Ziklag (1Ch_12:5). B.C. 1054.
2. The fifth son of David, born of his wife Abital during his reignm in Hebron (2Sa_3:4; 1Ch_3:3). B.C. cir. 1050.
3. Son of Maachah, and phylarch of the Simeonites in the time of David (1Ch_27:16). B.C. 1014.
4. Last named of the six brothers of Jehoram, the son of king Jehoshaphat, whom their father endowed richly (2Ch_21:2). B.C. 887.
5. Son of Mahalaleel and father of Amariah, ancestors of Athaiah of the family of Pharez, son of Judah (Neh_11:4). B.C. long ante 536.
6. Son of Reuel and father of Meshullam, the Benjamite chieftain at the time of the captivity (l Chronicles 9:5, A.V. “Shephathiah”). B.C. ante 588. See No. 8.
7. Son of Mattan, and one of the princes who advised Zedekiah to put Jeremiah to death (Jer_38:1). B.C. 589.
8. An Israelite whose descendants (or perhaps a place whose inhabitants) to the number of three hundred and. seventy-two returned with Zerubbabel from Babylon (Ezr_2:4; Neh_7:9). B.C. ante 536. He is apparently the same with him whose descendants to the number of eighty males returned under the leadership of Zebadiah, with Ezra (Ezr_1:3; Ezr_1:8). Whether he was identical with No. 6 is uncertain.
9. One of “Solomon s servants” whose descendants returned from Babylon under Zeriubbabel (Ezr_2:57; Neh_7:59).B.C. ante 536.
