("father of safety".)
1. Son of Phinehas, fourth high priest (1Ch_6:50). The Chronicon of Alexandria shows that his pontificate included the period of Ehud's judgeship, and probably of Eglon's oppression. Father of Bukki (1Ch_6:4-5; 1Ch_6:50-51; Ezr_7:4-5). Josephus (Ant. 8:1, 3) says he was succeeded in the priesthood by Eli; his descendants, until Zadok, falling to the rank of private persons.
2. Son of Bela of Benjamin: 1Ch_8:4.

a-bish?ū̇-a, abi-shoo?a (אבישׁוּע, 'ăbhı̄shūa‛, uncertain, perhaps ?father of wealth,? or ?my father is wealth?):
(1) A son of Bela the son of Benjamin (1Ch_8:4).
(2) The son of Phinehas, who was grandson to Aaron (1Ch_6:4, 1Ch_6:5, 1Ch_6:50; Ezr_7:5).

Abishu?a (father of safety), the son of Phinehas, and fourth high-priest of the Jews (1Ch_6:50). The commencement and duration of his pontificate are uncertain, but the latter is inferred, from circumstances, to have included the period in which Ehud was judge, and probably the preceding period of servitude to Eglon of Moab. He is called Abiezer by Josephus (Antiq. v. 11, 5).

Abishua
(Heb. Abishu'a, אֲבַישׁוּעִ, father of welfare, i.e. fortunate; Sept. Α᾿βισού or Α᾿βισοῦ, but in 1Ch_8:4 [v. r. Α᾿βεσσουέ] and Ezr_7:5, Α᾿βισουέ), the name of two men.
1. A son of Bela, and grandson of Benjamin (1Ch_8:4); possibly the same as JERIMOTH SEE JERIMOTH (1Ch_7:7). B.C. post 1856. SEE JACOB.
2. The son of Phinehas (grandson of Aaron) and father of Bukki, being the fourth high-priest of the Hebrews (1Ch_6:4-5; 1Ch_6:50; Ezr_7:5). Josephus calls him Abiezer (Α᾿βιεζέρης, Ant. 5. 11, 4), but elsewhere Josephus (Ι᾿ώσηπις, Ant. 8:1, 3, ed. Havercamp). He appears from the Chronicon of Alexandria to have been nearly contemporary with Ehud, B.C. cir. 1523-1466. SEE HIGH-PRIEST.
