What does a name in the Bible mean?

Name in the bible comes from the Hebrew term
שֵׁם
shêm
This term defines a landmark or memorial of individuality. What would that be?

Name defines a characteristic of an individual that can define or demarcate a person.

Nowadays people choose a name by sound and not by the meaning of the name. In the bible a person can have more than one name, as long as the names represent facts that describe the individual.

So many people do not have the correct name that define the framework of their being. But that will not always be the case. We can read.

Rev_2: 17 Whoever has ears, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. Whoever wins will give him hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new written name, which no one knows except the one who receives it.

This is not a factor that exists only in the New Testament, it refers to another text in Isaiah that says:

Isa 65:14 behold, my servants will sing for gladness of heart, but you will weep for sadness of heart, and howl for anguish of spirit.
Isa 65:15 And you will leave your name as a curse to my chosen ones; and the Lord God will kill you, but he will call his servants by another name.

So we can see that such a concept of a new name is in connection between the old and the new testament.

As the bible determines that a name is a landmark or memorial of individuality, that name represents what a person was or became during his lifetime. For example.

Terah had a son and he had the name

אַבְרָם
'abrâm
ab-rawm'

Which means great father.

Then God changed his name:

Gen 17: 5 You will no longer be called Abram, but Abraham will be your name; for I have made you the father of many nations;

Abraham comes from Hebrew

אַבְרָהָם
'abrâhâm
ab-raw-hawm'

That comes from the contraction of the term father, which defines population. So Abraham involves the determination that such a person is the father of a people or population.

So we must understand that the white stone that will be received contains a history of the individuality of this person's life.

So we can understand the fundamentals of the verse. When you say

"and on the stone a new written name, which no one knows except the one who receives it."

Because your life is based on this name, and the person knows what he did and how it is.

Now the character is formed in life, according to the steps he took on earth, once a person has acquired a special character he will receive a special name.

Eph 6: 8 Knowing that everyone, whether slave or free, will receive from the Lord every good thing he does.

2Co 5:10 For it is necessary for all of us to be manifest before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what he has done through the body, according to what he has done, good or evil.

Mat 16:27 For the Son of Man is to come in the glory of his Father, with his angels; and then he will repay each one according to his works.

Rev 22:12 Behold, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me, to repay each one according to his work.

Thus, each action taken in order to shape the character will define the eternal memorial acquired in the white stone given by the Lord.
