Gen 1: 6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let there be a separation between waters and waters.

It is natural that the planet earth that has a magnetic core had a dense atmosphere, composed of gases, in which it could not see anything. So it was necessary to make the atmosphere more transparent. A firmament is the possibility that human vision could observe the threshold of the atmosphere in the curvature of the earth. But why does it say separation between waters and waters? We say that we are on planet earth. But if a person is on a ship at sea he will say that he is on planet earth, and not on planet sea, even though he is surrounded by water. Ancient people determine that there is water in the sea and water in the sky, because the rain falls from the sky, so there is a division between the waters below, with the waters above that make up the rain.
