You know sometimes teachers make math become complicated and with many terms that make it difficult to understand. Let's learn how to do measure conversions.
For example I have ten packets of 100g of saltine, how many grams of saltiness do I have? Well, 10 times 100 is a thousand. So I have a thousand grams of saltiness that is 1 kilogram.
what to say thousand, of anything, for example kilometer, is thousand meters.
There are several similar terms that we can see here.
But do not be scared, let's learn by parts. First is this notation of number ten with a number on top.
Let's follow some rules, the first rule is always that the ten does not have number on top is why it has the number 1.
So now let's start, if I have 10 with two on top, then I have the number with two zeros and so is 100.
Now if you have the number 3 are 3 zeros in the number, which is equal to a thousand.
Come on how many zeros does the 10 with the number 5 on top? It has five zeros.
And 10 with the number 6 on top? Six zeros.
When we see the kilo we have to understand that it is 10 with three on top.
Let's do the conversion.
1000 grams in kilo. Remember that if we have 3 zeros then there are 10 with 3 on top, right?
Remember that kilo is 10 with three on top! So a thousand grams is 1 kilogram.
and 3000 grams in kilo? So, they are 3 times the 10 with the number 3 on top.
Why, kilo is not 10 with three on top? Then it gets 3 kilograms.
And 12000 grams in a kilo? How's it going? It gets 12 times 10 with 3 on top.
Then 12 kilograms.
A car moved 4000 meters, how much has it moved in miles?
4 times 10 with 3 on top, remember that 10 with the number three on top is kilo, so the car moved 4 miles.
Now, let's talk in the mathematical way, 10 with three on top is 10 on the cube or 10 on the third.
If the car walked 800,000 meters, how much has it moved in miles?
80 times 10 high to the cube is 80 kilometers.
And if the car moved 5 thousand and 500 meters. How much is that in miles?
Can you see that 5,000 has three zeros? What about five hundred? Can you see that 0.5 times a thousand equals 500?
See if I have 0.1 times 10, I have 1 if I have 0.1 times 100 I have 10. If I have 0.1 times 1000 I have 100.
In the same way that 0.5 times 1000 is 500.
Thus, 5 thousand and 500 is equal to 5.5 times thousand, thousand is 10 raised to the cube, and 10 raised to the cube is kilo. That is 5 thousand and 500 meters is equal to 5.5 kilometers.
If you get a watermelon of 6,700 grams, how much would it be in kilogram?
First we put the multiplication per thousand, which would be 6.7 times 1000 grams, sometimes a thousand a kilo, then 6.7 kilograms.
Now let's do exercises to fix.
20 thousand grams in kilo, 20 times 10 high to the cube, like 10 to the cube is kilo we have 20 kilograms.
12 thousand meters in kilometers, 12 times 10 high to the cube, as 10 to the cube is kilo we have 12 kilometers.
3 thousand and 300 meters in kilometers, 3.3 times a thousand, which is 3.3 times 10 to the cube, 10 to the cube is kilo then 3.3 km.
5 thousand and 200 grams of a pumpkin in kilogram? 5.2 times a thousand, which is 10 to the cube and 10 to the cube is kilo, then 5.2 kilogram.
