The June festivities originate from the so-called “quermesses”. Ancient fairs, which were types of fairs sponsored by the Catholic church, in order to raise funds for the church. These funds were used for construction, convent costs, or even church maintenance costs.
Sacred periods were thus defined, in which people were determined to go to these fairs to get in touch with the saints, and thus make gifts to them, to obtain graces. But this is still not the real origin. The real origin is in pagan festivals to offer gifts to the gods, and this occurred with the ancient Greeks, who celebrated for the different gods, with food, parties, and various other things. Later, this Greek custom passed to the Romans, and with the Roman church's adaptation of uniting Christianity with paganism, this mixture was used and festivals were created, as a type of variation of the festivals for the Roman gods.
As such festivals were a means of bringing joy to the population, such variations were accepted and propagated throughout all domains of the Roman church, adding money for the construction of new churches, and expanding the church's area of activity.
Currently, we have a regression of religious faith, people are caring about physical and material things, rather than philosophical or metaphysical concepts. Generating a reduction or even cancellation of the festivals, or June festivals.
