Nowadays, we can see that people are more concerned with their own pleasures than with helping others.
But why does this happen? In an old book we have the following thought:
Because of the increase of iniquity, the love of many will grow cold, but he who endures to the end will be saved.
Understand inequity as a violation of laws. But what laws? The laws that would define equality for all. Thus, when one can and the other cannot, usually due to differences in economic power, then the law is merely repression.
In this way, there is no law! Because the law should be for everyone. In this way, everyone begins to think of themselves, because there is no standard of justice.
Another text says:
Now, if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?
Thus, if the law is partial, then the foundations of equality are destroyed, and if they are destroyed, the just can do nothing. Thus, if the just can do nothing, there is no longer justice. And without justice, what would be the point of love if it would end up being violated by injustice.
And so, if love is violated by injustice, it begins to seem wrong to society, and the right thing to do is merely to enjoy the pleasures. And as insecurity in society increases, people do not worry about the future, their family, or even their lives.
When a person begins to see life and death in the same way, because living has no meaning, then everything else loses its meaning. Companionship, friendship, responsibility, intelligence, love and many other things lose their meaning, and everything is dominated by pleasure, because in pleasure people momentarily forget the irrationality of society, and enter a world created by themselves, like a dream.
But when they leave the dream, what they see when they return is a world that is increasingly hypocritical and destructive.
Each one seeking their own pleasure with things or people, each one serving each one's pleasure, so that each one continues living as long as possible in their irrational and pleasurable dream, instead of living in the hypocritical and domineering world.
