61. For it is clear that, for the remission of penalties and cases, the power of the pope alone is sufficient.
Extracting these concepts of power over forgiveness and penalties granted to the direction of the church. Luther clearly defines that money cannot be the foundation for salvation and forgiveness of sins. And that sins are linked to both repentance and good works, resulting from repentance.
We should never idealize that Martin Luther is a person without errors. He was merely a person who added good information. I was not free of distorted information, but I was going against the wrong positions. In fact, just Christ, we could define it as a perfect view of life. All other men must elevate the good, and extract the bad. Many try to nullify all the work of a historical individual because of his bad actions. If we did, there would be nothing good to be told, because everyone has something bad in their lives. Nor should we praise individuals, but actions, they are the right points that are important, regardless of the character\'s life.
In fact, many churches today still ask for money for healing, money for forgiveness, and doing as the Catholic Church did, defining indulgences. God\'s forgiveness is free, which is only possible through true repentance. On the website you can find all the theses described.
For the sake of truth and commitment to elucidate it , the following will discuss whether in Wittenberg , under the presidency of the Reverend Father Martin Luther , Master of Arts and Theology and Professor Santa latter in that locality . For this reason , he requests that those unable to be present and debate orally with us do so in writing , even if absent . In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ . Amen
1. By saying : " Repent " , etc. . [ Mt 4:17 ] , our Lord and Master Jesus Christ willed the entire life of believers should be repentance .
2 . This penance can not be understood to mean sacramental penance ( ie , confession and satisfaction , as administered by the priests ) .
3 . However , it does not mean solely inner repentance ; yes, interior penance would be void if , externally , did not produce all sorts of mortification of the flesh .
4 . Consequently , the penalty remains as long as the hatred of self (that is , true inner repentance ) , namely , to the entrance of the kingdom of heaven .
5 . The pope neither desires nor is able to remit any penalties except those imposed by his own decision or that of the canons .
6 . The pope can not remit any guilt, except by declaring that it has been remitted by God , or, indeed , remitting it in cases reserved to his judgment if they are despised , the guilt would certainly remain .
7 . God remits guilt to anyone without , at the same time, hold her , humiliated at all , the priest , his vicar .
8 . The penitential canons are imposed only on the living, according to the canons themselves , nothing should be imposed on the dying .
9. Therefore the Holy Spirit in the pope benefits when, in his decrees he always makes exception of the article of death and of necessity .
10 . Evil act knowingly and without those priests that the dying, reserve canonical penalties for purgatory.
11 . This weed changing the canonical penalty to the penalty of purgatory were evidently sown while the bishops slept .
12 . Formerly were imposed not after canonical penalties but before absolution , as tests of true contrition .
13. Through death , the dying pay all they are already dead to canonical rules, and , by law, be released from them .
14. Health or imperfect love in dying necessarily brings with it great fear , and so much more , the smaller the love.
15 . This fear and horror is sufficient of itself alone ( to say nothing of other things) to constitute the penalty of purgatory , since it is near to the horror of despair .
16. Hell , purgatory , and heaven seem to differ as to the despair, fear, and security .
17. It seems unnecessary for the souls in purgatory , which diminishes the horror in that love grows .
18 . Seems to have not been proven , nor by reason or Scripture , that they are outside the state of merit , of increasing love.
19. Also seems to have not been proved that souls in purgatory are certain of their bliss, at least not all , even if we , on our part, we have full assurance .
20 . Therefore , plenary remission of all penalties , the pope means not actually all , but only those imposed by himself .
21. Therefore err preachers of indulgences who claim that a man is absolved from every penalty and saved by papal indulgences .
22. Indeed , it does not relieve the souls in purgatory no penalty which, according to the canons, they would have paid in this life .
23. If can you give some forgiveness of all penalties whatsoever , it certainly is only given to the most perfect , ie to very few.
24. Therefore , most of the people are necessarily deceived by that indiscriminate and promise of release from penalty .
25. The same power that the Pope has over purgatory in general, any bishop or curate has in his diocese or parish .
26. The pope does well when he grants remission to souls not by the power of the keys (which he does not) , but by way of intercession.
27. Preach human doctrines who say that as soon as the jingling coin tossed in the box , the soul flies out [ of purgatory ] .
28. It is certain that when money clinks in the money chest , may increase profit and greed , the intercession of the Church, however, depends only on the will of God .
29. And who knows whether all souls in purgatory wish to be redeemed ? They say this was not the case with S. Severino and St. Paschal .
30 . No one is sure of the truth of his own contrition , much less that he has attained full remission .
31 . As rare as true penitent who is who truly buys indulgences , ie , is very rare .
32. They will be condemned eternally, together with their teachers, who believe themselves sure of their salvation because they have letters of pardon .
33 . One should be wary of those who say that the pope's pardons are that inestimable gift of God by which man is reconciled with God .
34. For the graces of indulgences are concerned only with the penalties of sacramental satisfaction , determined by humans .
35 . Preach no Christian who teach that contrition is to those who want to redeem or purchase confessional brief not be required .
36 . Any truly repentant Christian has a right to full remission of penalty and guilt , even without letters of pardon .
37 . Any true Christian , whether living or dead, participates in all the blessings of Christ and the Church , by the gift of God , even without letters of pardon .
38. Nevertheless , the remission and participation of the Pope in any way to be despised , because ( as I said ) the declaration of divine forgiveness.
39 . Even for the most learned theologians is very difficult to extol to the people the same time , freedom of indulgences and true contrition .
40 . True contrition seeks and loves penalties , while liberal pardons only relax and do hate them , at least giving occasion for both .
41 . It must be preached with caution on papal indulgences , so that people do not judge erroneously as preferable to other good works of love .
42 . Should teach Christians that the pope is not thought that the purchase of indulgences should in any way be compared with works of mercy .
43 . Should teach Christians that gives to the poor or lends to the needy does a better work than buying pardons .
44 . That occurs through the labor of love grows love and the person becomes better , whereas with the indulgences it does not become better, but only freer from punishment.
45 . Should teach Christians that he who sees a needy man and neglects to spend on indulgences obtains for himself not the indulgences of the pope , but the wrath of God .
46 . Should teach Christians that if they are not goods in abundance , must keep what is needed for your home and way of wasting money on indulgences .
47 . Should teach Christians that the buying of pardons is free and does not constitute an obligation .
48 . Should teach Christians that , in granting indulgences , the pope , as well as more need , as most want a devout prayer to his favor than the money you are ready to pay .
49 . Should teach Christians that the pope's pardons are useful if you do not put their trust in them , but very harmful if they lose their fear of God because of them .
50 . Should teach Christians that if the pope knew the exactions of the preachers of indulgences , prefer to ashes Basilica of St. Peter to build it with the skin, flesh and bones of his sheep .
51 . Should teach Christians that the pope would be willing - as they should - to give money to those many of whom certain hawkers of pardons cajole money, even though it was necessary to sell the basilica of St. Peter .
52 . It is vain to trust in salvation by indulgence letters , even though the commissary , or even the pope himself, were to stake his soul as security .
53 . They are enemies of Christ and the pope who , through the preaching of indulgences , are entirely shut the word of God in other churches .
54 . Injury is done the Word of God when , in the same sermon , focuses as much or more time on pardons than on this Word .
55 . The attitude of the Pope necessarily is that if pardons (which are the least important ) are celebrated with one bell , with single processions and ceremonies , the Gospel (which is most important) should be preached with a hundred bells , processions and ceremonies .
56 . The treasures of the Church , of which the pope distributes indulgences , are not sufficiently named or known among the people of Christ .
57 . Clearly they certainly are not temporal in nature , as many preachers do not distribute them freely but only gather them .
58 . Nor are they the merits of Christ and the saints , because they always operate without the pope , the grace for the inner man and the cross , death, and hell for the outward man .
59 . St. Lawrence said that the poor were the treasures of the Church of the same , employing , however , as the word was used in his time .
60 . Is Without rashness we say that the keys of the Church , which had been provided by Christ's merit , are that treasure .
61 . For it is clear that for the remission of penalties and cases , the power of the pope alone is enough.
62 . The true treasure of the Church is the Most Holy Gospel of the glory and grace of God .
63. This treasure , however, is the most hated , and rightly so , because it makes the first to be last .
64 . On the other hand , the treasure of indulgences is naturally most acceptable , and rightly so , for it makes the last to be first .
65 . For this reason , the treasures of the Gospel are nets with which they formerly were wont to fish for men of wealth .
66 . The treasures of indulgences , in turn , are nets with which they fish for the riches of men today.
67 . The indulgences which the demagogues acclaim as the greatest graces to be truly such, in so far as they promote gain .
68. However , in fact, they are the very smallest graces compared with the grace of God and the piety of the cross.
69 . Bishops and curates are bound to admit , with all reverence the commissaries of papal indulgences .
70 . , However, have the added obligation of observing with two eyes and attend with all their ears, lest these commissioners do not preach their own dreams instead of what they have been entrusted by the Pope.
71 . Let him be anathema and accursed who speaks against the truth concerning papal indulgences .
72 . Be blessed , however, who guards against the lust and license of the words of a preacher of indulgences .
73 . Just as the pope justly thunders against those who , in any way , seek to defraud the sale of indulgences ,
74 . Much intend to thunder against those who use the pretext of indulgences , seek to defraud the holy love and truth .
75 . To think the papal pardons so effective to the extent that could absolve a man even if he had violated the Mother of God , if that were possible , it's crazy .
76. We affirm on the contrary that papal indulgences can not even remove the very least of venial sins in regard to his guilt .
77. The statement that even St. Peter, if he were now Pope , could not bestow greater graces is blasphemy against St. Peter and the pope .
78. We affirm , on the contrary, that this too , just like any Pope has greater graces , namely , the Gospel , powers , gifts of healing , etc. . , As it says in 1 Cor 12 .
79. It is blasphemy to say that the cross with the arms of Pope insignemente erected , equivalent to the cross of Christ .
80 . Will be accountable bishops , curates and theologians who allow such talk to be spread among the people .
81 . This unbridled preaching of pardons makes it no easy matter , even for learned men , to defend the dignity of the pope from slander or questions undoubtedly shrewd , laity .
82 . For example, why does not the pope evacuates purgatory for the sake of holy love and the dire need of the souls - that would be the fairest of all causes - if redeems an infinite number of souls for the sake of money for the construction funestíssimo basilica - which is so insignificant a cause?
83 . Again: why they keep birthdays and the funeral of the deceased and why does he not return or permit the withdrawal of the endowments founded back in their favor , since it is no longer just pray for the redeemed ?
84. Similarly , that new piety of God and the pope is this : because of the money , and let the wicked enemy redeem a pious soul and friend of God , but not to redeem because of the need of the same pious and beloved soul , for Free love?
85 . Again: Why are the penitential canons - in fact and through disuse long since abrogated and dead - are they still redeemed with money , through the granting of indulgences , as though they were still in full force ?
86 . Again: why the pope, whose wealth today is greater than the riches of the richest , build with his own money at least this one church of St. Peter , instead of doing it with the money of poor believers ?
87 . Likewise , what is the pope remit or grant to those who , by perfect contrition , have a right to full remission and participation?
88 . Again: What greater blessing could come to the Church than if the pope , as he now does once, and bestow these remissions and participations 100 times a day on every believer ?
89 . Since , with indulgences , the pope seeks the salvation of souls money , why does he suspend the indulgences and pardons granted heretofore, since these have equal efficacy ?
90 . To repress these very sharp arguments of the laity by force alone , without refute them by giving reasons , is to expose the Church and the pope to the ridicule of their enemies and to make Christians unhappy .
91 . If, therefore , pardons were preached according to the spirit and mind of the pope , all these doubts would be readily resolved and would not even have arisen .
92 . Away, then , with all those prophets who say to Christ's people , "Peace , peace ! " there is no peace !
93 . Blessed be all those prophets who say to the people of Christ, " Cross Cross ! " there is no cross !
94 . It should exhort Christians to be diligent in following Christ, their Head, through penalties, deaths, and hell ;
95 . and thus be confident of entering into heaven through many tribulations rather than the sake of peace .
