Nutrigenetics studies the effects of genetic variation on nutrition responses. It is the study of genetic variations capable of modifying metabolism and nutrient utilization by the body. Some individuals need more than one nutrient than others, depending on polymorphisms.
Nutrigenomics studies the effects of nutrition on gene expression and function. It studies the modulating effect of chemical compounds in foods on DNA synthesis and stability and gene expression.
Two individuals with the same BMI need different amounts of calories to maintain their energy expenditure, this study is nutrigenetics.
An individual with C677T polymorphism may have formation problems depending on folate concentration than an individual who does not have this polymorphism. This is nutrigenomics.
Nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics are part of nutritional genomics; such terms define distinct approaches to study to elucidate the interaction between genes and diet.
Normally, a standard nutrient-rich, quality-of-life diet meets the needs of nutrigenetics.
But normally nutrigenomics can detect special factors that are not defined in nutrigenetics, such as the effect of the C677T polymorphism.
