CLAW.—In Dan_4:33 ‘claw’ means a bird’s claw; but in Deu_14:6 and Zec_11:16 it has the obsolete meaning of an animal’s hoof.

klô (פרסה, parṣāh, literally, ?hoof?): One of the marks of a ?clean? animal is stated Thus: ?Every beast that parteth the hoof, and cleaveth the cleft into two claws, ye shall eat? (Deu_14:6 the King James Version; the Revised Version (British and American) ?hath the hoof cloven in two?). See CHEW; CUD. the King James Version uses the word ?claws? where the Revised Version (British and American) supplies ?hoofs? in Zec_11:16, ?and will tear their hoofs in pieces,? as the sheep are being overdriven. In the only other passage containing the word (Dan_4:33) there is no Hebrew equivalent in the original - ?his nails like birds' (claws).?

Claw
(פִּרְסָה, parsah', cleft, i.e. cloven foot), prop. a hoof (as usually rendered) of a bifurcated animal (Exo_10:26; Mic_4:13; Eze_32:11), or of a solid-footed quadruped (e.g. a horse, Isa_5:28; Jer_47:3); hence for the distinctive mark of a clean (q.v.) creature (“claw,” Deu_14:16), or the sharp weapons of a beast of prey (“claw,” Zec_11:16), or the talons of a predatory bird (“claw,” Dan_4:33). In one passage (Psa_10:10) the powerful, clawed paw of a lion (q.v.) is poetically denoted by the term עֲציּמים, “strong ones,”
