ELIASHIB.—1. The high priest who was contemporary with Nehemiah. He was son of Joiakim, grandson of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, the contemporary of Zerubbabel (Neh_12:10, Ezr_3:1), and father of Joiada (Neh_12:10; Neh_13:28). He assisted in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerus, during Nehemiah’s governorship (Neh_3:1). He can have had no sympathy with the exclusive policy of Ezra and Nehemiah, for both he himself and members of his family allied themselves with the leading foreign opponents of Nehemiah. See Joiada, No. 2, Tobiah, and Sanballat. 2. A singer of the time of Ezra, who had married a foreign wife (Ezr_10:24); called in 1Es_9:24 Eliasibus. 3. An Israelite of the family of Zattu (Ezr_10:27; in 1Es_9:28 Eliasimus); and 4. another of the family of Bani (Ezr_10:36; called in 1Es_9:34 Enasibus), who had married foreign wives. 5. A son of Elioenai (1Ch_3:24). 6. The name of a priestly house (1Ch_24:12). 7. Father of Jehohanan, to whose chamber in the Temple Ezra resorted (Ezr_10:6); possibly identical with No. 1.

1. 1Ch_24:12.
2. 1Ch_3:24.
3. High priest when Nehemiah rebuilt the walls (Neh_3:1-20-21). Energetic in building the sheepgate, sanctifying and setting up its doors; but relationship to Tobiah the Ammonite outweighed regard for the sanctity of the temple. Nehemiah was angry with him for preparing a room therein for his pagan connection (Neh_13:4-7), in opposition to God's prohibition (Deu_23:3-4). His grandson too had married the pagan Horonite Sanballat's daughter (Neh_13:28). Ungodly alliances are a snare to religious professors (2Co_6:14-18; Mat_10:37). "Therefore (says Nehemiah) I chased him from me. Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood." His genealogy is given (Neh_12:10; Neh_12:22), see Ezr_10:6.
4. Ezr_10:24.
5. Ezr_10:27.
6. Ezr_10:36.

(2) Head of the eleventh course of priests (1Ch_24:12).
(3) The high priest in the time of Nehemiah. He, with his brethren the priests, helped in the rebuilding of the wall (Neh_3:1). See SANBALLAT.

Eliashib
(Hebrew Elyashib', אֶלְיָשַׁיב, whom God will restore; Sept. Ε᾿λιασεβών, Ε᾿λιαβί, Ε᾿λιασείβ, Ελιασούβ, etc.; Josephus Ε᾿λιάσιβος; (Vulg. Eliasub, Eliasib), a common name of Israelites, especially at the later period of the O.T. history.
1. A priest in the time of king David; head of the eleventh "course" in the order of the "governors" (שָׂדִיס) of the sanctuary (1Ch_24:12). B.C. 1013.
2. A Levitical singer who repudiated his Gentile wife after the exile (Ezr_10:24). B.C. 458.
3. An Israelite of the lineage of Zattu, who did the same (Ezr_10:27). B.C. 458.
4. An Israelite of the lineage of Bani, who did the same (Ezr_10:36). B.C. 458.
5. The high-priest of the Jews in the time of Nehemiah (Neh_12:28). B.C. 446. With the assistance of his fellow-priests, he rebuilt the eastern city wall adjoining the Temple (Neh_3:1). His own extensive mansion was doubtless situated in the same vicinity, probably on the ridge Ophel (Nehemiah in, 20,21). SEE JERUSALEM.
Eliashib was in some way allied (קָיוֹב=near) to Tobiah the Ammonite, for whom he had prepared an ante-room in the Temple, a desecration which excited the pious indignation of Nehemiah (Neh_13:4; Neh_13:7). One of the grandsons of Eliashib had also married the daughter of Sanballat the Horonite (Neh_13:28). There seems no reason to doubt that the same Eliashib is referred to in Ezr_10:6, as the father of Johanan, who occupied an apartment in the Temple (comp. Josephus, Ant. 11:5, 4). He is evidently the same with the son of Joiakim and father of Joiada (Josephus, "Judas," Ant. 11:7, 1), in the succession of high-priests (Neh_12:10; Neh_12:22). SEE HIGH-PRIEST.
6. A son of Elioenai, and member of the latest family of the lineage of Zerubbabel, mentioned in the Old Test. (1Ch_3:24). B.C. 406.
