a-lı̄?a (עליה, ‛alyāh): One of the dukes, or heads of thousands of Edom (1Ch_1:51). In Gen_36:40 the name is Alvah (עלוה, ‛alwāh), the only difference being the change of the weaker ו, v, of Gen to the somewhat stronger, י, y, of the later Chronicles, a change which is not infrequent in Hebrew. He is not to be confused, as in HDB, with the Alian of the same chapter.
