LIBNI.The eldest son of Gershon, that is to say, the eponym of a principal family of Gershonite Levites, Exo_6:17, Num_3:18, 1Ch_6:17; 1Ch_6:20. In 1Ch_6:29 [Heb. 14], perhaps owing to some dislocation of the text, the name appears as that of the eponym of a family of Merarites. The patronymic Libnites occurs in Num_3:21; Num_26:58. Cf. Ladan.

2. The son of Mahli or Mahali, son of Merari, 1Ch_6:29, as the text at present stands. It is probable, however, that he is the same as the preceding, and that something has been omitted. Compare 1Ch_6:29 with 1Ch_6:20; 1Ch_6:42.

(Heb. Libni', לבְנַי, white; Sept. Λοβενεί, Λοβενί), the first-named of the two sons of Gershon, the son of Levi (Exo_6:17; Num_3:18; Num_3:21; 1Ch_6:17; comp. Num_26:58); elsewhere called LAADAN (1Ch_23:7; 1Ch_26:21). B.C. post. 1856. His son is called Jahath (1Ch_6:20; 1Ch_6:43), and his descendants were named LIBNITES (Num_3:21; Num_26:58). In 1Ch_6:29, by some error he is called the son of Mahli and the father of Shimei.
