MALCHIJAH.—1. A descendant of Gershom (1Ch_6:40 [Heb. 25]). 2. A priest, the father of Pashhur (1Ch_9:12, Neh_11:12), same as Malchiah of Jer_21:1; Jer_38:1. 3. Head of the 5th course of priests (1Ch_24:9), perhaps the same as the preceding. 4. 5. Two of the sons of Parosh, who had married foreign wives (Ezr_10:25 bis); called in 1Es_9:25 Malchias and Asibias respectively. 6. One of the sons of Harim who had married a foreign wife (Ezr_10:31). In Neh_3:11 he is mentioned as taking part in the repairing of the wall. He is called in 1Es_9:32 Malchias. 7. Malchijah the son of Rechab repaired the dung-gate (Neh_3:14). 8. One of the guild of the goldsmiths who helped to repair the wall (Neh_3:31). 9. One of those who stood at Ezra’s left hand at the reading of the Law (Neh_8:4). 10. One of those who sealed the covenant (Neh_10:3), probably the same as No. 2. 11. A priest who took part in the ceremony of dedicating the wall (Neh_12:42).

mal-kı̄?ja (מלפּיּה, malkı̄yāh, ?Yah is king?; Μελχείας, Melcheı́as, with variants):
(1) A Levite, descendant of Gershom, of those whom David set over the ?service of sting? in the worship (1Ch_6:40).
(2) The head of the 5th course of priests (1Ch_24:9).
(3) One of the laymen who had taken ?strange wives? during the exile (Ezr_10:25); the ?Melchias? of 1 Esdras 9:26.
(4) Another of the same name (Ezr_10:25; two in same verse). Called ?Asibias? in 1 Esdras 9:26.
(5) Another under the same offense, son of Harim (Ezr_10:31). ?Melchias? in 1 Esdras 9:32.
(6) One of the ?repairers? who helped with the ?tower of the furnaces? (Neh_3:11).
(7) Son of Rechab ruler of Beth-haccerem, repairer of the dung gate (Neh_3:14).
(8) A goldsmith who helped in building the walls of Jerusalem (Neh_3:31).
(9) One of those at Ezra's left hand when he read the law (though possibly one of the above (Neh_8:4)). In 1 Esdras 9:44 ?Melchias.?
(10) One of the covenant signatories (Neh_10:3).
(11) The father of Pashhur (Neh_11:12; Jer_21:1; Jer_38:1).
(12) A priest, a singer at the dedication of the walls of Jerusalem under Ezra and Nehemiah (Neh_12:42).
(13) (מלכּיהוּ, malkı̄yāhū as above with u ending): Son of Ham-melech (or, as 1Ki_22:26; 2Ch_28:7 translate it, ?king's son?). Jeremiah was cast into his dungeon or pit (Jer_38:6).
The King James Version spells ?Malchiah? or ?Malchijah? indifferently with ?Melchiah? in Jer_21:1; the English Revised Version has ?Malchiah? in Jer_21:1; Jer_38:1, Jer_38:6, elsewhere ?Malchijah?; the American Standard Revised Version has ?Malchijah? throughout.
