MERAIOTH.1. Son of Ahitub and father of Zadok (1Ch_9:11, Neh_11:11). 2. A Levite (1Ch_6:6 f., Ezr_7:3); called in 1Es_8:2 Memeroth and in 2Es_1:2 Marimoth. 3. A priestly house in the days of Joiakim (Neh_12:15 = Meremoth of Neh_12:3).
Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible
Edited by James Hastings, D.D. Published in 1909
1. Sprung from Eleazar, Aaron's son; ancestor of Zadok and Ezra (1Ch_6:6). Lightfoot (Temple Serv. 4:1) thought that he was next before Eli, and that at his death the high priesthood passed from Eleazar's to Ithamar's line. Meraioth and Ahitub are perhaps transposed in Azariah's genealogy (1Ch_9:11; Neh_11:11).
2. Neh_12:15; MEREMOTH in Neh_12:3.

Mera'ioth. (rebellious).
1, A descendant of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, and head of a priestly house. 1Ch_6:61; 1Ch_7:62. It is apparently another Meraioth, who comes in between Zadok and Ahitub, in the genealogy of Azariah. 1Ch_9:11; Neh_11:11.
2. The head of one of the houses of priests, which in the time of Joiakim, the son of Jeshu, a was represented by Helkai. Neh_12:15.

Meraioth
(Hebrews Merayoth', מְרָיוֹת, rebellions; Sept. Μεραιώθ, Μεραώθ, and Μαριώθ v. r. Μαριήλ), the name of one or more leading priests.
1. The son of Zerahiah and father of Amariah, a high-priest of the line of Eleazar (1Ch_6:6-7; 1Ch_6:52; Ezr_7:3). BC. considerably ante 1062. It was thought by Lightfoot that he was the immediate predecessor of Eli in the office of high-priest, and that at his death the high-priesthood changed from the line of Eleazar to the line of Ithamar (Temple Service, iv, § 1). In 1Ch_9:11; Neh_11:11, his name appears to have become transposed between those of Zadok and Ahitub, instead of its proper place after the latter, as may be seen from 1Ch_6:6-12. SEE HIGH-PRIEST.
2. A chief priest whose son Helkai was contemporary with the high-priest Joiakim (Neh_12:15); doubtless identical with the MEREMOTH of Neh_12:3.
