("a garment".) (Gen_36:36-37; 1Ch_1:47-48). A king of Edom. Of Masrekah. From separate cities being assigned to most of the Edomite kings it is supposed Edom was a confederacy of tribes, and the chief city of the reigning tribe was capital of the whole.

sam?la (שׂמלה, samlāh; Σαλαμά, Salamá): One of the kings of Edom, of the city of Masrekah. He reigned before the Israelites had kings (Gen_36:36, Gen_36:37; 1Ch_1:47, 1Ch_1:48). The fact that the city is mentioned in connection with the name of the king suggests that Edom was a confederacy at this time and the chief city was the metropolis of the whole country.

Samlah
(Heb. Samlah', שִׂמְלָה, a garment; Sept Σαλαμά, Σαμαά, v.r. Σαμαδά, Σεβλά), a king who reigned in Edom before the Israelites had a king (Gen_36:36-37; 1Ch_1:47-48). B.C. post 1618. He was the successor of Hadad or Hadar, and was of Masrrekah, that being probably the chief city during his reign. This mention of a separate city as belonging to each (almost without exception) of the kings of Edom suggests that the Edomitish kingdom consisted of a confederacy of tribes, and that the chief city of the reigning tribe was the metropolis of the whole.
