SHECANIAH.1. A descendant of Zeruh. (1Ch_3:21-22, cf. Ezr_8:3 [1Es_8:29 Sechenias]). 2. Au exile who returned (Ezr_8:5 [1Es_8:32 Samechenias]). 3. Chief of the tenth course of priests (1Ch_24:11). 4. A priest (2Ch_31:15). 5. A contemporary of Ezra (Ezr_10:2 [1Es_8:92 Jechonias]). 6. The father of Shemaiah (Neh_3:29). It is possible that he and No. 1 are identical. 7. The father-in-law of Tobiah the Ammonite (Neh_6:18). 8. The eponym of a family which returned with Zerubbabel (Neh_12:3). It is the same name which, by interchange of b and k, appears as Shebaniah in Neh_10:4; Neh_12:14.
