TOPHEL.—See Dizahab.
Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible
Edited by James Hastings, D.D. Published in 1909

Tufileh, (Robinson, Bibl. Res. ii. 570), S.E. of the Dead Sea. Ninety-nine springs and rivulets flowing into the Ghor water the neighbourhood. It is surrounded by apple, apricot, fig, pomegranate, and olive trees. It is naturally chosen as a landmark (Deu_1:1).
Fausset's Bible Dictionary

To'phel. (mortar). Deu_1:1. Tophel has been identified, with Tufileh, on a wady of the same name, running north, of Bozra toward the southeast corner of the Dead Sea.
Smith's Bible Dictionary
By Dr. William Smith.Published in 1863

tō?fel (תּפל, tōphel; Τόφολ, Tóphol): This name is found in a passage with many difficulties (Deu_1:1). The verse ostensibly makes clearer the position occupied by the camp of Israel where Moses addressed the people, by reference to certain other places which might be presumed to be better known. Not one of them, however, has been satisfactorily identified. Some think Tophel may be represented by the modern et-Ṭafeleh, 15 miles Southeast of the Dead Sea, on the caravan road from Petra to Kerak. Apart from the question of position, the change of t to ṭ is not easily explained. Meantime we must suspend judgment.

(Heb. תֹּפֵל, mortar Sept. Τοφόλ; Vulg. Thophel), a place mentioned in Deuteronomy 1, 1 as a boundary (? on the N. E.) of the great Sinaitic desert of Paran. It has therefore been with great probability identified with Tufileh (comp. Schwarz, Palaest. p. 210) on a wady of the same name running north of Bozra towards the north-west into the Ghor and south- east corner of the Dead Sea (Robinson, Bibl. Res. 2. 570). This latter is a most fertile region, having many springs and rivulets flowing into the Gh6r, and large plantations of fruit trees, whence figs are exported. The bird katta, a kind of partridge, is found there in great numbers, and the steinbock pastures in herds of forty or fifty together (Burckhardt, Holy Land. p. 405,406). The brook Tufileh, or its immediate neighborhood, is still the recognized boundary between Edom and Moab (Tristram, Land of Moab, p. 57).
