Samuel's older son (1Ch_6:28). JOEL in 1Ch_6:33 and 1Sa_8:2. "Joel" may have dropped out from 1Ch_6:28, and wesheeni will mean "and the second."

Vash'ni. (strong). The first-born of Samuel as the text now stands in 1Ch_6:28; but in 1Sa_8:2, the name of his first-born is Joel. Most probably, in the Chronicles, the name of Joel was dropped out, and Vashni is a corruption of vesheni, or "(the) second".

vash?nı̄ (ושׁני, washnı̄, see below; the Septuagint's Codex Vaticanus Σανεί, Saneı́; Codex Alexandrinus Σανί, Sanı́): Read in 1Ch_6:28 the King James Version (Hebrew 13) as the name of the firstborn son of Samuel. According to 1Ch_6:33 (Hebrew 18) and 1Sa_8:2, Samuel's oldest son was Joel, and the second Abijah. The explanation of this is that in 1Ch_6:28 the word taken then as a proper name is really ?and second?; so following Septuagint, Lucian, and Syriac we read (as the Revised Version (British and American)), ?And the sons of Samuel: the first-born, Joel, and the second Abijah.?

(Heb. Vashni', וִשְׁנַי, my strength, or strong; Sept. Σανί; Vulg. Vasseni), the first-born of Samuel according to 1Ch_6:28 [Hebrews 13]; but 1Sa_8:2 shows that the true reading should be וְשֵׁנַי, the second, and that the name of Joel; the eldest son, has dropped out. SEE SAMUEL.
