VASHNI.Samuels firstborn son, according to MT [Note: Massoretic Text.] of 1Ch_6:13 (Eng. 28), which is followed by AV [Note: Authorized Version.] . RV [Note: Revised Version.] , following the Syr. (see mg.), and on the strength of 1Ch_6:18 (33) and the || 1Sa_8:2, supplies Joel as the name of Samuels oldest son, and substitutes and the second Abiah for Vashni and Abiah.

According to 1Ch_6:33 (Hebrew 18) and 1Sa_8:2, Samuel's oldest son was Joel, and the second Abijah. The explanation of this is that in 1Ch_6:28 the word taken then as a proper name is really ?and second?; so following Septuagint, Lucian, and Syriac we read (as the Revised Version (British and American)), ?And the sons of Samuel: the first-born, Joel, and the second Abijah.?
