WENCH.This word, once good English, was used by the Bishops Bible of 1568, and was transferred to AV [Note: Authorized Version.] at 2Sa_17:17. So Wyclif at Mat_9:24 Go ye away, for the wenche is not dead, but slepith.

wench, wensh (שׁפחה, shiphḥāh): The word ?wench? is found only in 2Sa_17:17 the King James Version, where the Revised Version (British and American) has ?maid-servant.? The Hebrew word shiphḥāh here used is a common term for maid-servant, female slave. the King James Version used the word ?wench? to convey the meaning maid-servant, which was a common use of the word at that time, but it is now practically obsolete.
