ATTHARATES (1Es_9:49).A corruption of the title tirshatha; cf. Neh_8:9 and art. Attharias.
Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible
Edited by James Hastings, D.D. Published in 1909
a-thar?a-tēz: A title assigned to Nehemiah, probably by a later editor (Neh_8:9). The Septuagint omits the title; the Vulgate (Jerome's Latin Bible, 390-405 ad) gives ?Athersatha?; the King James Version reads ?Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha.? Tirshatha is the Persian title for a local or provincial governor (Neh_8:9 = 1 Esdras 9:49). See TIRSHATHA.
