(1) Azarias, who put away his ?strange wife? (1 Esdras 9:21); compare Uzziah (Ezr_10:21).
(2) Azarias, who stood at the right side of Ezra when the law was read to the people (1 Esdras 9:43); omitted in Ezr_8:4.
(3) Azarias, who interpreted the law to the people (1 Esdras 9:48); compare Azariah (Neh_8:7).
(4) Azarias, a name assumed by the angel Raphael (Tobit 5:12; 6:6, 13; 7:8; 9:2). See RAPHAEL.
(5) Azarias, a general in the service of Judas Maccabee (1 Macc 5:18, 56, 60).
(6) Azarias, one of the three men thrown into the fiery furnace (The Song of the three Children (Azariah) verses 2, 66); compare Azariah (Dan_1:6; Dan_2:17), Abed-nego (Dan_1:7; Dan_2:49; Dan_3:12).

Azarias
(Α᾿ζαρίας, the Greek form of Azarfah), the name of several men in the Apocrypha.
1. The last named of the “sons” of Emmett (rather Harim) among the priests who promised to renounce their Gentile wives after the captivity (1Es_9:21) evidently the UZZIAH SEE UZZIAH (q.v.) of the true text
(Ezr_10:21).
2. One of the nobles stated to have supported Ezra on the right while reading the law to the people (1Es_9:43); but the genuine list (Neh_8:4) does not contain this name.
3. One of the priests who expounded the law on the same occasion (1Es_9:48); the AZARIAH SEE AZARIAH (q.v.) of the Hebrews text
(Neh_8:7).
4. The son of Helchias and father of Seraias in the genealogy of Ezra (2 [Vulg. 4] Ezr_1:1); the AZARIAH SEE AZARIAH (q.v.) of the Hebrews lineage (Ezr_7:1).
5. A name assumed by the angel Raphael (Tob_5:12; Tob_6:6; Tob_6:13; Tob_7:8; Tob_9:2).
6. The name (Song of 3 Children, ver. 2, 26, 66) of Abednego, Daniel's companion in trial, i.e. AZARIAH SEE AZARIAH (q.v.) of Dan_1:7. He is mentioned by this Greek appellation also in 1Ma_2:59, and by Josephus (Ant. 10:10,1). SEE DANIEL, ADDITIONS TO. 7. One of the generals under Judas Maccabaeus (1Ma_5:18); he was defeated by Gorgias near Jamnia (1Ma_5:56; 1Ma_5:60; Josephus, Ant. 12, 8, 2 and 6).
