SHAUL.1. A king of Edom, Gen_36:37 f. = 1Ch_1:43 f. 2. A son of Simeon (Gen_46:10, Exo_6:15, Num_26:13, 1Ch_4:24). The clan of which he is the eponym was of mixed Isr. and Can. descent, hence Shaul is called in Gen_46:10 and Exo_6:15 the son of the Canaanitess. In Num_26:13 the patronymic Shaulites occurs. 3. An ancestor of Samuel (1Ch_6:24 (9), called in 1Ch_6:36 (21) Joel).

2. Shaul of Rehoboth by the river was one of the kings of Edom, and successor of Samlah (1Ch_1:48-49). In the A.V. of Gen_36:37 he is less accurately called Saul (q.v.).
3. A Kohathite, son of Uzziah (1Ch_6:24). B.C. cir. 1030.
