(Heb. Tebeth', טֵבֵת, apparently of Assyrian origin, Tibituo), the tenth month (Est_2:16) of the sacred year of the Hebrews, corresponding in the main to January. Jerome has the following comment upon Eze_29:1 : Decimus mensis, qui Hebrseis appellatur Tebeth, et apud Egyptios [with whom it was the fifth month] Τύβι [or Τωβί, Coptic Tobi]; apud Romanos. Januarius. In Arabic it is called Tubah, in Greek Τυβί or Τήβ, and in Sanskrit Tapas. SEE CALENDAR, JEWISH.
