BINNUI (‘a building’).—1. Head of a family that returned with Zerub. (Neh_7:15 = Bani of Ezr_2:10). 2. A Levite (Ezr_8:33 [prob. = Bani of Neh_8:7 and Bunni of Neh_9:4], Neh_12:8). 3. A son of Pahath-moab (Ezr_10:30 = Balnuus of 1Es_9:31). 4. A son of Bani who had married a foreign wife (Ezr_10:38). bin?ū̇-ı̄ (בּנּוּי, binnūy, a proper name, ?a building up?):
(1) A Levite, living in the time of Ezra (Ezr_8:33; Neh_10:9; Neh_12:8).
(2) One of the benē Paḥath-mō'abh who had taken foreign wives (Ezr_10:30 - Balnuus of 1 Esdras 9:31) and one of the , benē Bānı̄ (Ezr_10:38) who had also intermarried.
(3) The son of Henadad, who built part of the wall of Jerusalem (Neh_3:24), and sealed the covenant with Nehemiah (Neh_10:9). In all probability he is identical with ?Bavvai, the son of Henadad? mentioned in Neh_3:18. ?Bavvai? is either a corruption of ?Binnui,? or is the name of the Levitical house of which Bavvai was the chief representative. Binnui is mentioned in Neh_10:9 as a leading Levite, and, besides, the names in these verses are obviously those of priests and Levites; so the former theory is probably correct.
(4) Head of a family who returned with Zerubbabel (Neh_7:15; Ezr_2:10).
